What Do Tennis Players and Golfers Have in Common? Elbow Problems.

Tennis and golf are not sports that are generally regarded as violent or dangerous, but injuries in these sports are still common due to one unifying factor: strain on the tendons of the elbow. Tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow are two variations of the same condition: epicondylitis, which is an inflammation of the tendons that attach to the elbow. You don’t have to be a golfer or tennis player to experience this condition, but if you are and you’ve got elbow pain that takes you out of the game, keep reading to find out how Baxter and Walsh can help.

Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis)

Tennis elbow is known among physical therapists as lateral epicondylitis, which means it is a form of epicondylitis that affects the outside of the forearm and elbow. Tennis players are obviously susceptible to it, but any profession or hobby that uses repetitive motions of the forehand and backhand can cause it too, like painting, gardening, and cooking. The pain of tennis elbow radiates from the outside of the elbow to the forearm, and can either be a constant aching pain or one that you only feel while performing certain activities.

Golfer’s Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis)

Golfer’s Elbow affects the inner side of the arm and elbow, hence the name “medial.” Golfer’s Elbow is typically caused by repetitive twisting and downward bending motions, which is why golfers so commonly suffer from it. However, other sports and activities can cause it as well, like weightlifting, carpentry, and racquet sports (interestingly, playing tennis can cause Golfer’s Elbow!) Sufferers of this condition will experience pain while twisting the arm, and after a while, the affected hand and wrist will show signs of weakness.

Tennis and Golfer’s Elbow can be treated non-surgically, and at Baxter and Walsh Physical Therapy, we consider surgery to be a last resort for this condition. Get your first appointment scheduled right now at either of our offices!
